Canada Day brings out ‘cheerful people’
Manitobans paid tribute to the maple leaf yesterday as numerous people took to the outdoors for Canada Day celebrations.
In Winnipeg, Assiniboine Park featured games and activities for families, The Forks showed off a range of events and concerts and Osborne Village spotlighted its street festival.
“It’s good to see a lot of people out,” said Daniel Gowen, who spent a few hours playing football outside with friends yesterday at the Assiniboine Park and planned to check out the fireworks later in the evening.
Inside Assiniboine Park, parents and kids came to enjoy the sunshine early in the afternoon.
“It’s been a beautiful day so far,” said Doug Fullerton, who visited the park with his wife and two kids, age two and four.
Getting Canada Day off to a bouncing start, the kids enjoyed playing inside giant, inflatable castles brought out for the event, said Fullerton.
Elsewhere around the park, people threw frisbees, tossed around footballs, had picnics, and fired up barbecues.
“It’s a good day to spend with family,” said Lynne Shillington, who came out to Assiniboine Park with her two-year-old daughter.
LAID-BACK ATMOSPHERE
Despite the full parking lots and busy environments across the city, some people remarked on the laid-back atmosphere of the day.
“I think we have cheerful people out — that’s the best part of it,” said Terry Towart, who visited the Leo Mol Sculpture Garden and planned to stop by Osborne Village for its street celebration.
“It’s great to see people making use of the city.”
